Life-cycle assessment of smart homes and its effect for the environment

A new paper from the University of Oulu in Finland suggests that the energy use of smart devices outweighs the benefits that they offer over a five-year period, lending weight to the idea that smart devices may actually contribute to global warming. Using a life-cycle assessment method, the researchers found that the smart plugs were far more energy intensive in their consumption, using over four times the amount that the meters did.
