New forum setting benchmarks for greener construction

The Carbon Leadership Forum, a collaborative group of academics and industry professionals, published the results of its Embodied Carbon Benchmark Study which uses Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to measure all carbon emissions that occur when extracting, manufacturing and installing building materials. The group, based in the University of Washington (UW) College of Built Environments, hopes this is a step towards measuring and reducing the global carbon footprint of the building construction industry.
 
Citing the need to track carbon emissions across a building's entire period of use, the benchmark study covers the largest known interactive database of building-embodied carbon with information on more than 1,000 buildings, a necessary first step in arming industry professionals with better information and guidance on how to implement low-carbon method in construction practice.
