Canada to Adopt National Clean Fuel Standard
December 8, 2016
The Canadian federal government has announced plans to work with the provinces to develop a national clear fuel standard as part of it’s national climate plan.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is tentatively scheduled to being negotiations with the provincial and territorial premiers in mid-December.
While the clean fuel standard remains to be negotiated, Environment Canada said the new standard will apply to “many sectors” beyond transportation, including home and building heating and industrial power. The standard will be “based on life-cycle analysis” of the fuel, meaning production emissions will also be counted. This will place pressure on newer biofuels to reduce their overall carbon footprint.
The Environment Canada background paper suggested that the clean fuel standard could reduce Canada’s emission by 30 million tonnes annually by 2030.
