Informal networking and end of year celebration

October 2012

Simon Lockrey provided a pictorial record of his work in Antarctica undertaken in conjunction with Otago University. He related the images to a study which uses a streamlined LCA to model the annual whole of system impacts associated with operations at Antarctica’s Scott Base and also examines the role of behaviours and practices in directing material and energy flows.

The evening of the 2012 ALCAS AGM was a good time to attract interest in the August networking event at the Feddish Bar & Restaurant - Federation Square's River Terrace Yarra Building.

'LCA and Green Star - reflections on a series of workshops run across Australia for GBCA regarding LCA and Product Disclosure' was presented by Dr Neil Kirkpatrick on 20th June. Thanks to Net Balance for hosting this event.

Dr. Kirkpatrick discussed some of the unique benefits of using life cycle thinking in efficient building design, including examples from his own experiences internationally. He demonstrated the business case for LCA in saving energy and increasing revenue through smart design.

While conducting workshops for GBCA, he noted the challenge of finding a balance between comprehensive LCA in the design phase, and user-friendly guidance that could be put into practice during construction and operation.

GBCA has released a discussion paper on the proposed method by which LCA principles will be incorporated into Green Star, and is seeking feedback from experienced LCA practitioners and other stakeholders in the property and construction sector. ALCAS and several corporate members will each be compiling formal responses to the GBCA to offer feedback and recommendations.

-------------

It was a  mild evening in Melbourne, with autumn providing a real "Indian summer, on April 18th 2012 for our informal networking event at the Transit Cocktail Lounge. A good turnout of committed Members and friends provided a wothwhile evening.

-----------

On February 15th 2012 Tim Grant gave an interesting presentation,Progress of the AusLCI Database, which was followed by general discussion. A document with the presentation slides is available here. The event was sponsored by SimaPro and hosted in the Energetics office in Melbourne.

2011
A formal Victorian Chapter event on 21 September 2011, co-hosted by Rob Rouwette of  Energetics and Tim Grant of Life Cycle Strategies, attracted about 25 participants and augured well for the group. The drawcard was a presentation, on the plans for a French environmental ratings labelling scheme and the use of LCA, by Arnaud Roquesalane of EVEA Conseil.

Then, in mid-November 2011, more than a dozen Victorian members and others interested gathered at Transit Cocktail Lounge at Federation Square for a variety of informal presentations and networking. An interesting evening was had by all.
